General Information Before Booking

Age & Boating Permit Requirements

  • You must be at least 18 years old to rent any motorized watercraft.
  • Valid identification is required at check-in for all renters and operators.
  • Minnesota law requires certain operators to have a valid Minnesota Watercraft Operator’s Permit. Renters are responsible for ensuring all operators meet Minnesota legal requirements before operating the boat.

Security Deposit

  • A $300 security deposit pre-authorization will be placed on the renter’s credit or debit card before departure.
  • The deposit may be used for damages, lost equipment, excessive cleaning, fuel charges, or late return fees.
  • If no charges are incurred, the deposit will be refunded within 5 business days after the rental ends.

Rental Duration

  • Rentals are available for hourly and extended periods.
  • Boats must be returned at least one hour before sunset unless otherwise approved.
  • Rental times are fixed.  Late arrivals do not extend the rental period or adjust the scheduled return time.
  • Late returns are subject to a fee of $75 per 15 minutes.

Cancellation Policy

  • Reservations canceled 10 or more days before the rental date receive a full refund.
  • Reservations canceled 9 days or less before the rental date are non-refundable.
  • No cancellations or refunds are allowed for rentals scheduled on July 4th, regardless of weather conditions.
  • Cancellations must be completed through the reservation system or by contacting BJ’s Bait before the cancellation deadline.

Weather Policy

  • Weather-related cancellations are permitted only in unsafe conditions, including:
    • Lightning
    • Sustained winds exceeding 25 mph
    • Heavy rain
  • Forecasted weather alone does not qualify for cancellation or refund.
  • Weather decisions are made solely at the discretion of BJ’s Bait & Tackle using NOAA reports for the South Haven, Minnesota area.
  • If BJ’s Bait cancels a rental due to unsafe conditions, customers will receive either a full refund or the option to reschedule.
  • No refunds will be issued after the rental period has started.

Boating Area Restrictions

  • All boats must remain on Clearwater Lake, Lake Augusta, or Otter Lake.
  • Access to Lake Augusta and Otter Lake depends on water levels and current lake conditions.
  • Certain conditions, including low water, high water, vegetation, debris, or unsafe navigation conditions, may prevent access to Lake Augusta or Otter Lake at the time of your rental.
  • BJ’s Bait & Tackle does not guarantee access to Lake Augusta or Otter Lake, and no refunds or discounts will be issued due to restricted access caused by lake conditions.
  • Watercraft may not be transported to any other body of water.

Pets

  • Dogs are only permitted on the Black Pearl and Commodore pontoons.
  • Additional cleaning fees may apply if excessive cleaning is required after the rental.

Prohibited Activities

  • Grills, open flames, and cooking equipment are not permitted on any rental watercraft.
  • Tubing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, and towing activities are prohibited.
  • Smoking, illegal drug use, reckless operation, or unsafe behavior is prohibited on all rental equipment.

Additional Rules

  • Renters are responsible for all damages, violations, lost equipment, and unsafe operation during the rental period.
  • By booking, you agree to the Boat Rental Agreement presented during checkout.
